Wintersköl Weekend

Aspen is raising a glass to the season with this weekend’s 62nd annual Wintersköl festival. Originally started in 1951 to give business a post-Christmas boost, founder Jack DePagter also wanted to pay homage to the Nordic lifestyle many locals adopted. This winter carnival is all about the vintage spirit, the official slogan of Wintersköl 2013.

There’s a snow packed schedule of events, although I didn’t see the “Snowmass Splash” of 1977 (pictured) anywhere on it. Any takers on helping me bring it back next year?

Thursday, January 10th

Wintersculpt (4 pm; ongoing throughout weekend):

Four teams selected by Anderson Ranch Arts Center will transform giant snow cubes into a works of winter art. Walk the Aspen Mall and watch them in action until they’re completed by Saturday. FREE.

Cash’d Out (9 pm):

A Johnny Cash tribute band. $18/$22 day of; www.bellyupaspen.com

Friday, January 11th

Men’s Health & Women’s Health Village (9 am; ongoing throughout weekend):

Swag alert: the magazine duo is setting up shop on Aspen Mountain and Gondola Plaza for the “ultimate party in the snow” with plenty of freebies. FREE.

Soupsköl,  Aspen’s 10th Annual Soup Cook-Off (4 pm):

Who has the best soup in the valley? We get to decide. Restaurants will serve up hot samples hoping they get enough votes via text to take home the coveted Soup Bowl Trophy. FREE.

JAS Café Downstairs presents Rose Max & Ramatis (7 pm + 9 pm):

Warm up downstairs at The Little Nell with Brazilian jazz. $35; www.jazzaspensnowmass.org

Saturday, January 12th

Audi Ski Challenge (11 am):

Local ski racers will attempt dual slalom on Aspen Mountain’s NASTAR Course in support of the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. FREE.

Torchlight Descent + Wintersköl Fireworks Extravaganza (8:15 pm):

Find a room with a view and enjoy. FREE.

Sunday, January 13th

Aspen Art Museum Artist Conversation (6 pm):

Chief Curator Heidi Zuckerman Jacobson will present 2012-2013 Aspen/Snowmass lift-ticket artist David Shrigley’s short films followed by a conversation. FREE.
